This Drawing Intensive course is for anyone who wants to learn how to draw and develop confidence in drawing. No experience or talent is needed! This course draws heavily from the tools and strategies of Dr. Betty Edward’s New York Times best selling book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”, coupled with strategies from other master artists who draw from observation.
We will learn the 5 perceptual skills:
Each session starts with a short presentation followed by step-by-step demonstration for each skill. Students will work on fun and engaging exercises designed to access and activate the right brain to learn how to draw and see differently. Students will go home with a portfolio of drawings and a self portrait. The skills are straightforward and they can be perfected with practice, just like any other skills. Progress can be dramatic! Why is it important to learn how to draw?
"Just as we teach our children their ABC's so that they can read and write; and as we teach them their numbers so that they can compute and calculate; so too, must we teach them the non-verbal, non numerical skills of visual perception.
Without that, we are robbing our children of the use of important brain functions. With perceptual skills training, students are far better able to concentrate, to learn, to grasp abstract concepts and ideas, and to see and appreciate the world around them. Learning to draw is an efficient means for tapping into latent observational skills.” ~ Dr. Betty Edwards.

Why this course? A note from Esther…
I took “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” when I was a teenager with Kristen Newton, who trained directly under Dr. Betty Edwards. I have taken drawing and art lessons since I could hold a pencil and it was through Dr. Edward’s strategies that I had my first “Aha” moment! I understood what drawing is; it’s a matter of translating a 3D world onto a 2D surface. It changed my life. How I wish I had learnt this material earlier! I am passionate about sharing this material along with other drawing strategies from master artists I’ve studied under over the years with anyone who wants to learn how to draw.

Testimonials/ Student feedback:
"Esther is able to connect the theory and technique in a simple way. The class size is about right. I’m able to get enough attention from Esther, who is also open to our own style while giving appropriate guidances. The class also helped me to pick up my passion for drawing. I had a great sense of achievement looking at the finished work!" ~ Elaine H., Adult drawing course student / Oct 2021
“They like this drawing course very much. They find it very interesting and the teacher is very friendly. This is very different from what is taught in normal schools.” ~ Lisa, mother of Rhea and Hannah ages 8 and 10 / Aug 2021
“It’s always fun in your classes, always laughing and learning… Not only have you been an awesome teacher, you have also been a wonderful friend! Teachers like that are hard to come by, and I’m super, ultra lucky to have one of those!” - E. Gu, 2018/ Year 7 student
“If you try hard, everything is possible.” - Julius L. 2014/ Year 6 student upon reflection of an art project
"I sincerely enjoyed Esther’s class over the past weeks. It was paced well with various concepts and exercises that break down realistic portrait drawing. I’m even taking the course again to solidify my understanding and have more structured practice." Tanya H., Adult drawing course student / Oct 2021
